Dogs Are Designed As Carnivores

Teeth that rip and tear

♦ Jaws that are hinged to open and close, not move side to side

♦ Short, straight digestive tract

♦ Opportunistic Hunters – they hunt but not always successful

♦ When unable to eat fresh kill, will eat a variety of available options

♦ Dogs have evolved to eat what was available to them.  They now produce amylase, a digestive enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates

♦ Dogs do not thrive on carbohydrates, but they can survive on them.

With Domestication Comes Change
